In my research I discovered that animals have been mistreated and neglected in zoos for years. I noticed that while there are positive reasons to have zoos, as in, family time and being able to see wild animals up close, there are more negative reasons leading to why zoos should be shut down. Zoos will never be a morally sound of entertainment though, due to reintroduction programs, insufficient exhibits, unsatisfactory education, killed escapees, premature death, surplus animals, and improper care. The opposition mainly states that zoos are educational, and safe. On the contrary, zoos could not possibly be educational or safe due to the fact that exhibits rarely have signs that state facts about the animals and there has been multiple cases of animals escaping their exhibits, and people falling into the animals exhibits. Although these issues should be enough to close down zoos, there also many more factors that contribute that should cause the zoos to be shut down. Other issues include the animals being captured and animals being killed prematurely or if they are surplus. Animals should the right to be free in the wild, and not imprisoned in an exhibit that is too small for them.
